Abstract:
The OpenVMS Alpha operating system provides many features that facilitate developing customer-written device drivers. This session reviews the OpenVMS interfaces available for writing OpenVMS Alpha device drivers, summarizes the privileged-code changes required for drivers to run on OpenVMS V7.0 and later, describes the new OpenVMS Alpha example device driver (new in OpenVMS V7.2-1), and explains how to take advantage of support for 64-bit addressing, the Galaxy Software Architecture and new direct memory access (DMA) system routines.

Objectives:
Understand OpenVMS interfaces and features available to support customer-written device drivers.
 
Understand changes from Version 7.0 and later that affect user-written OpenVMS Alpha device drivers.
 
Be familiar with code modifications to take advantage of 64-bit addressing, the Galaxy Software Architecture, and new OpenVMS Alpha driver interfaces as well as the new OpenVMS Alpha example device driver available in OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2-1.  

Prerequisites for attendees:
-Knowledge of OpenVMS operating system and programming concepts -Experience with programming in C -Understanding of hardware devices for which customer-written drivers are being developed

Required Skill Level:
Advanced
