Abstract:
This session describes how the Open Group's Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) R1.2.2 technology has been implemented on OpenVMS. The session first provides a brief overview of the architecture, features and benefits of DCE. It then examines the differences between DCE for OpenVMS V3.0 and the Open Group's reference implementation, and looks at how V3.0 differs from previous DCE for OpenVMS implementations. Finally, this session discusses the use of DCE versus COM on OpenVMS in a multivendor client-server environment.

Objectives:
Understand how DCE for OpenVMS V3.0 differs from the Open Group's implementation, and how it differs from previous OpenVMS versions of DCE
 
Understand the steps to take to upgrade from previous versions of DCE for OpenVMS, and what things to watch out for in doing so
 
Understand the relationship between DCE and COM on OpenVMS, and when each is an appropriate choice for their environment
