Abstract:
This one day course will discuss - in detail - each of NT's major security mechanisms, their particular strengths and weaknesses, and how they can be layered to maximize security while minimizing both risk and user inconvenience. Various models will be presented and discussed, showing how the use of both active and passive security measures can be used to shore up security wherever NT is used. Participants will be shown how to approach security under NT as a dynamic process, detailing how hackers break into Windows NT systems (to include the latest threats) and what steps (programmatically or via third party tools) may be taken to fend off, trap & identify the "wily hacker". Topics include: Section 1: The Changing Face of Network Security Section 2: Understanding the Threat Section 3: Elements of NTís Security Subsystem Section 4: Securing the NT File System Section 5: Users, Groups & Security Section 6: Rights & Privileges Section 7: Security & the NT Registry Section 8: System Polices & User Profiles Session Break Section 9: Workstation-Specific Security Concerns Section 10: Security & the Active Desktop Section 11: Server-Specific Security Concerns Section 12: Security & Remote Access Issues Section 13: Securing NT Web Services Section 14: Monitoring Network Activity Section 15: Developing Security Models Section 16: Windows 2000 and Beyond

Objectives:
Gain a new understanding of the interrelated components within NT's security architecture.
 
Layer NT's security components to maximize security within their network environments. Attendees will understand the requisite steps for creating a custom security policy that incorporates Windows NT.
 
Identify security holes in NT's security and understand how hackers exploit them.  

Prerequisites for attendees:
A strong understanding of the Windows NT Operating System Network security experience

Required Skill Level:
Intermediate
