Abstract:
This session is titled “A real Life WAN Cluster” and describes the author's experience in setting up a disaster tolerant cluster on two sites separated by 7 miles. This configuration was aimed at high availability and disaster tolerance. The cluster has disks shadowed across FDDI. The session addresses the issues involved including design, failover, reliability, hardware, setup and procedures and outlines some of the situations that continual failure testing has uncovered, and how to address these issues.

Objectives:
Understand the key requirements for configuring and operating a disaster tolerant cluster of the type used by Computershare UK.
 
Differentiate between the design criteria needed to support a "non-stop" operation versus a "data-vault" operation.
 
Appreciate some of the common pit-falls from operating a real disaster tolerant cluster.
